Flop Watch

Following up an earlier post about preachy left-wing movies and their capacity to deliever box-office bombs, we turn our attention to the most recent three.

  • Munich - out 5 weeks, has made $38 million, cost $70.
  • Syriana - seems to be out of theaters now; it made $44 million, cost $50.
  • Bareback Mountin'- out 7 weeks, has made $42 million, cost $14.

The "cost" figures do NOT include the cost of marketing, which can run between $25-50 million. (Updated: Jan 23th)

Well, it's not looking good for Syriana or Munich. They will both likely lose money. The international business will vary depending on the type of film. American comedies, like Wedding Crashers will make 5-30% overseas. Big blockbuster, like Spiderman or Star Wars will make 45-55% overseas. Anti-western movies like the Kingdom of Heaven will make about 75% of its money overseas.

However, these values are "gross revenue." There is marketing and the cut the theater will take for airing it.

Finally, marketing costs will vary depending on the movie, the cost, and the amount of natural publicity it gets. Star Wars Episode I only had market costs of 15 million, about 10% of production costs. Dodgeball only cost $20 mil to make, but they spent $30 million in marketing. Troy had production costs of $175 mil and had marketing costs of $50 million. I think you 50% statistic is bollocks itself.

A movie like Dodgeball is a stupid movie they don't have to think about. Politics doesn't fit into that category

When you take a movie, purport it as fact, and then twist it, that is propoganda. In Munich, Speilberg has Golda Meir saying things she never did. The real Mossad agents didn't have such self doubt about their mission. It is fictionalized history.

Moore made a political propoganda movie right before election that was seen by about 1 in 5 Kerry voters....which is their hardcore base. I'm really not surprised.
